The American Journal of Sports Medicine released a shocking study several years ago, revealing that when the the kneecap is out of alignment, it reduces stability and increases knee pain. When your kneecap is in alignment, it dramatically improves stability and reduces or even eliminates knee pain altogether.

Today, I’d like to share with you the 3 most common “postural mistakes” older adults make that puts their kneecap out of alignment, thereby creating the pain in their knee many of us are all too familiar with.

3 Most Common “Postural Mistakes” That Cause Kneecap Misalignment and Knee Joint Pain

#1: Standing On One Leg With Your Other Leg Crossed Over

Look at the image on the right. The man appears to be in a relaxed position, but in reality, this position is wreaking havoc on his knee.

But it’s not the knee you might expect. He has most of his weight on his left leg with right legged crossed over it. Why is this important?

Remember, it all goes back to the kneecap and how it is aligned. When you stand with your right leg crossed over your left, it starts to shorten the muscles, ligaments and tendons in your right leg.

These are all connected, either directly or indirectly, to your kneecap. When they shorten, they pull your knee cap over to one side creating misalignment.

Once your kneecap is in misalignment, you have instability and as soon as you start walking, playing golf, or going up the stairs…. that’s when you begin to experience knee pain!

#2: Sitting In A Chair With Your Legs Crossed

The next postural mistake to avoid is sitting with one leg crossed over the other. This may be the most popular mistake, but it is one of the major destroyers of knees. Why?

It’s the same reason as above but has en even greater effect! Picture for a moment a rubber band. When you pull the rubber band, what happens to the amount of tension?

It gets tighter, of course. The reason this is important is because when you put one leg over the other it creates more tension in your knee because it pulls your knee cap out of alignment.

I bet you didn’t realize how these common posture mistakes could be the root cause of your knee pain. Most people don’t, and that’s why knee pain is such a widespread epidemic for adults and seniors.

#3 Walking with Toes Pointed Outward (AKA The Pigeon Walk)

This is a very common, however subtle, mistake that you must be aware of to eliminate knee pain.

Look at the picture on the right. Notice the man’s toes on both feet. Which direction are they facing?

They are facing outward at an angle. When it comes to knee stability, this is a BAD position to be in because the weight of your body is putting stress in all the wrong places.

In a ground-breaking study in 2004 performed by two renowned doctors (Dr. Tetsworth and Dr. Paley), it was found that even a 5% misalignment of your knee can cause a 70-90% increase in added stress inside the joint.

The study revealed “This dramatic increase in load creates a four-fold increase in the risk of worsening the knee over 18 months”.

When I heard this for the first time, I was shocked. The tiniest misalignment of even 5% can lead to harm in your knees for years to come.

Now you understand the 3 BIGGEST postural mistakes that cause knee pain.

And, as you can see, the biggest postural mistakes are relatively “small” mistakes, right? Simply crossing your legs or walking a little pigeon-toed? Who knew things like that would have such lasting, damaging consequences?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years of physical therapy and research, it’s that the little things add up, and the results can rob you of your mobility, independence and quality of life.
